| Seolbong Mountain is a guardian mountain
of Icheon. It is 70-80% highland whose
size is about 30,000 pyeong(sq. yards).
It has a rock called knife rock. These
areas had mountain fortress walls in
the old days. In these areas, there
are stone towers, stone pieces and crockery
pieces with nine foundation stones (facade
9m, side 6.3m) that show the site was
used for some building. This site tells
that the spot is for the mountain fortress
wall of the period of the Three States.

Behind the main temple of Seolbong
Mountain¡¯s Yeongwolam, Maaebul is
sculptured on a rock, 10m high and
4m thick. It is facing south-east
and, in terms of size, is the largest
in the area, being 9.6m high and 3m
wide between its shoulders. Its head
is like a bold monk, so it is considered
as the face of Monk Jijang. The face
is pretty fat, so it looks tough.
Three moral ways are written on the
neck. The left hand is gripping some
objects. The creases of the monk¢¥s
robe, which is extended from his left
hand, is extended to the bottom part
of his knee. His right hand is showing
his palm and is placed in front of
the chest. |

| Maaebul is sculptured on a big granite rock called mireuk rock (a stone statue
of Buddha). At the back of this rock,
the express provision [Taepyeongheunggook
6 years Sinsa February 13rd¡¦ the code
of Silla chivalry¡¦] is engraved so
it is considered that this was created
in the 6th year of King Gyeongjong
of Goryeo (981). This statue is wearing
a thin Buddhism style high crown and
holding a lotus flower branch. It
has high local colors and is poorly
sculptured. But it is a statue that
was sculptured in the 10th century.
It is very valuable to compare with
other statues which were made in the
same age. The total height of this
statue is 3.2m. It has 1.2m and 1.47m
of shoulder width and knee width.
It is 0.8m higher than the Indian
Ajanta so it considered as the highest
seated statue of Buddha. |

The white pine is a kind of evergreen
pine with needle-shaped leaves. At
the top of the short branch there
are three pieces of leaves that are
sharp and short.
The height of this tree is about 16m.
It has a good shape due to the two
separated stumps at the bottom base.
The age of this tree is considered
to be more than 220 years old. There
is no certain source, but the old
people say the tomb of Dal Yong Min
was enshrined to the place and his
descendants planted the tree. |

| According to a rumor, Taejo Lee was
born in Hanheung, Yeongjo was born in
Seoul, and Jeonggam was born in Gyerying
Mountain. The tree, which was planted
in Gangwon-do, was dead. There was a
rumor that some great person would be
born here. So Sins¡¯ family settled here.
Historically, there were a lot of people
who passed civil [literary] and military
arts exams and there were a lot of people
who passed the Higher Civil Service
Examination. In the book Taekriji, which
was written by Junghwan Lee, the name
of tree was called Banryongsong (a tree
that looks like a dragon) if there is
a Bokgeoji under Wonjeok Mountain. It
is also called Yongsong (a dragon pine)
because the old people thought the tree
was a dragon who would fly up to the
sky. It was also called Manryongsong
because of their similar pronunciation.
This tree is very weird and wonderful
because those people who take the bark
of this tree will die from syphilis.

It is located deep inside of Dolan
village. It is spread broadly behind
a big pine tree. The front yard, which
opens out in to four directions, is
placed in front. People can come in
from the south/east. The straight detached
house is near the front yard. Based
on the in-yard behind the room for guests,
¤¡-shaped main building is located in
the centre of the house. In the eastern
part, there is a separated house so
it is shaped like a square.
The inside home, detached house, and
guest room have been preserved very
well without transformation due to good
quality of building. But the detached
house is considered to have been built
in the early 20th century and guest
rooms were also rebuilt in the year.

big because its height is about 5m and
upper body is about 1.08m. Korean Buddhism

Bakgol. This Buddhist statue is expressed
by lines on a rock, which is flat

definite and balanced. The firm attitude
might be the best of the area in the

| It is a stone castle that encloses
the Jubong Ridge of Seolseong Mountain
and about 20-30 thousand pyeong. Sinheung
Temple is near the northern castle
wall. It is a mountain fortress wall
including a small valley. Seolsung
is preserved in the most definite
castle formation which existed in
Icheon. If you come down to the south
east part from the top of mountain
along the mountain ridge, there are
some parts where the walls continue
for 20 to 30m. Seolseong was built
by Silla¡¯s 17th King Naemul, who built
it to protect from Japanese invasion.
When it was built, it was built only
on the spot where snow fell, like
wearing a belt. The castle was built
by the trace, so it was called Seolseong
(Snow Castle). |

The knee of this statue has been
removed and its face is not perfect
due to abrasion but it is one that
shows the characters of a stoned Buddhist
standing statue of this area of Goryeo.
The upper body is curved but it is
unbalanced by having its hand on the
front and has no bulk in the chest
with thick silks. Also its pose is
stiffened. It has the characteristics
of a Goryeo stoned standing statue.
A stoned Buddhist standing statue,
which was standing in a hillock beside
the village without the halo, was
copied by cement and enshrined. It
informs a wide range of public about
the characteristics of stoned Buddhist
standing statue. |
